St. Dominic’s Choir

Can you sing?
Do you enjoy good music?
What do you do on a Sunday?

If you would like to share the joy of singing in harmony, become part of a rich and
rewarding musical development, and
meet new friends, then why not...
"have a go!"

Membership

The choir is a friendly, diverse group of members from varied backgrounds and of all ages. A highly ecumenical mixture of denominations and faiths, all finding enjoyment and spiritual value in both the music and the ambiance of St. Dominic’s Priory.

A ‘once-a-month’ option is already proving attractive to those who are keen to take the opportunity of singing with us but who can’t manage a more frequent commitment. A core group of singers provide music for all the Masses, and new members are welcome to join at any time.

The church provides musical scores that choir members can take home to practice if they so wish. Each person’s availability is generally agreed with Martin Stacey before the beginning of each month, as we plan our music according to the number of singers.

Music at St. Dominic’s

The church is home to one of the most Important historic pipe organs in the country, built by Father" Henry Willis in 1883, on which international artists give organ recitals every month of the year.
Chamber music and choral concerts feature regularly, with contributions from both amateur and professional ensembles.
On Sundays, music is provided by an instrumental folk group at the 10:00 Mass, while the choir provides a mixture of plainchant and polyphony at the 12.00 Mass. Both groups contribute appropriate music on special feast days.

The Choir

A strong choral tradition is upheld by the choir who sing voluntarily at the 12.00 Mass. Its members are attracted by the opportunity to meet with friends on a Sunday morning to sing some of the most exquisite sacred music. Traditional plainchant is maintained alongside polyphonic settings of the Mass, hymns and motets by various composers from the Renaissance to the present day.

Since the summer of 2001, a monthly routine has been standardised to make best use of resources. This has led to a reconstitution of the choir to encourage larger membership and enhance the enjoyment of singing. Martin Stacey (the Director of Music) directs the choir through a large and stimulating choral repertoire, aiming at high standards and encouraging everyone to feel welcomed and relaxed. He has initiated a variety of musical events and activities at St. Dominic’s since his appointment in 2000 and the choir is at the heart of music making in the community.

Rehearsals

On Sunday mornings we meet in the Choir Room of the Priory at 11.o'clock and break for coffee before Mass begins at 12,00 noon after which drinks usually follow in the local pub!
